Snakes of Delaware

When rescuing small wild animals, it’s a good idea to wear gloves. Be aware, however, that gloves provide only a small amount of protection. Please take care that the snake doesn’t bite you.

Most common: Eastern Rat Snake, Black Racer, Common Garter Snake, Common Watersnake.

More timid and less common: Red Corn Snake, Plain-bellied Water Snake, Ring necked Snake, Dekay’s Brownsnake, Eastern Hog-nosed Snake, Smooth Earth Snake, Eastern Kingsnake, Queensnake, Rough Green Snake, Common Ribbon Snake, Eastern Milk Snake, Scarletsnake, Red-bellied Snake, Common Worm Snake

Venomous: Eastern Copperhead, Timber Rattlesnake
