ABOUT
US
The Delaware Council of Wildlife Rehabilitators and Educators (DCWRE) is a diverse group of individuals of all age groups and experience levels who come together to help the wildlife of Delaware. They share their experience with one another and promote wildlife awareness within the state. DCWRE is an incorporated 501(c)(3) non-profit organization registered in the state of Delaware. It was established in 1995 to care for sick, injured and abandoned wildlife with the goal of returning them to the wild.
We are supported by annual membership dues and public donations.
Our goals:
-
To educate the public about wildlife habits, habitats, and values.
-
To promote respect for wildlife species throughout the State of Delaware.
-
To rehabilitate orphaned or injured wildlife by providing the necessary care required to release them back into their natural habitats.
-
To provide continuing education and training opportunities to our members. This ensures
-
that the animals being rehabilitated are receiving the best quality care possible.
WHAT TO DO
SHOULD YOU ENCOUNTER A WILD ANIMAL IN NEED
IF IT IS A YOUNG BIRD
Try to locate a nest and place it back into it. If the bird is able to actively escape from you, then leave it alone, it is a fledling and a parent is nearby to care for it.
A NEST OF RABBITS
Usually an adult rabbit is nearby and you should leave the babies alone. If you injured one with a piece of power equipment, remove it from the nest and call a number below.
IF YOU NEED TO INTERVENE,
DON'T...
Allow children or household pets near them. Don't give them medications, or put them on top of an electric heating pad.
IF YOU NEED TO INTERVENE,
DO...
Pick them up with gloves. Place them in a cage or a box with a blanket. Offer warmth through a bottle filled with warm water.
